Welcome to Miss McDowell’s Class of Year 5’s

We have two wonderful teaching assistants Mrs Brigg and Mrs Padam who also help the children to learn, read, understand, follow the class rules, support one another and challenge themselves to reach their full potential.

Year 5 is an important Year for all pupils as not only do the children build upon the Science, Maths and English skills which have already been taught but it is also their penultimate year at St Thomas’s before they reach Year 6. This year will be jam-packed with lots of learning, fun, games and laughter along the way.

In English this year, we will be delving into some fabulous texts, from which we will be basing our writing upon. Miss McDowell is exceptionally excited about developing the children into sophisticated writers as Year 5 sees the introduction of more complex grammar and punctuation!
Our maths this year we will focus on consolidating and deepening our understanding of key mathematical concepts, ensuring that we have secure our knowledge.  Reasoning and problem solving will play a pivotal role in our maths lessons.
In science, we will be launching ourselves into space to learn about the solar system, exploring forces, investigating materials and their properties, learning about life cycles and further developing our knowledge of living things.

As part of the Upper Juniors we set a strong precedence for the rest of the school in terms of uniform and behaviour and, as such, standards and expectations are high and reinforced. Towards the end of the summer term, Year 5 take over some of the prefect duties from Year 6 in preparation for their transfer to the top of the school.

Key Information for Year 5:
  •  Homework and spellings will be sent home on a Friday and will be returned on the following Wednesday.
  • Spelling Tests and Mental Maths tests will take place on Fridays so remember to keep practising until then.
  • Please record any reading that you do at home in your reading diaries.  These will be checked weekly.
  • Please continue to use Times Tables Rockstars to make sure your time tables knowledge stays sharp!

In amongst the hard work there will be some interesting activities to take part in, scientific investigations to undertake, swimming certificates to achieve, assemblies to perform, plays to watch, prayers to say, poems to recite, races to win, problems to solve, jokes to tell and most importantly good times to be had by ALL.
