Intent
At St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, we are determined to ensure each KS2 child receives quality MFL teaching. We chose to teach the children French as this supports their transition into our local secondary schools that also teach French. Lessons should teach children the skills needed to communicate confidently in French. In upper Key stage 2, children should also be able to express their thoughts and ideas both in speech and writing. The children enjoy using the resources including video stories, songs and games. The children have the opportunity to learn French vocabulary linked to a range of topics.
It is intended that when children leave St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore, other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.
Implementation
All Key stage 2 classes use Twinkle Planlt for teaching French. These lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammar are built in.
Topics for each term provide structure and context as well as offering an insight into the culture of French-speaking countries and communities. The introduction and revision of key vocabulary and grammatical structures is built into each lesson. This vocabulary is then included in display materials and additional resources so that children have opportunities to repeat and revise their learning. All of our lesson packs contain adult guidance, accurate language subject knowledge and accompanying audio materials which will enable progression through KS2.
Impact
We want to ensure that French is loved by teachers and pupils across school, therefore encouraging them to embark on further language studies.
Children will develop their language and communication through four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the French culture.
Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
